Entrepreneurs to Emulate: Sagar Khairnar

Sagar Khairnar, aged 24, is currently a student of IIM Kozhikode, pursuing his first year of management course. He owns BlueSki Enterprise, a manufacturing & trading unit of briquettes, which has been around for about a year now. Here are excerpts from a talk with him.

Techaloo: Why this particular business?

Sagar: Briquette is a green fuel, which helps in reduction of emission of Carbon Dioxide. This is the need of the hour, which pushed us into this foray.
Techaloo: Is this your first business?

Sagar: Yes, it is our first business.
Techaloo:  What was the source of finance for your business?

Sagar: The main reason to start with trading of briquettes was lack of financial resources to set up manufacturing unit. Banks were reluctant to give loan with co-lateral so we started with trading which require lesser finance, which was arranged from personal savings and relatives.

Techaloo: Who are your customers? What are your most significant products or services?

Sagar: MNCs as well as local manufacturers who use briquette fired boilers. Our product briquette is used as fuel for generation of steam.

Techaloo: What has been your most effective marketing tactic or technique?

Sagar: As of now, leveraging up on the personal contact and word of mouth is what is helping us.
Techaloo: What are the most crucial things you have done to grow your business and what are your plans of expansion?

Sagar: We still are at very nascent stage. We want BlueSki to be synonymous to renewable energy is what I can say right now.

Techaloo: What is the biggest obstacle in the path of being an entrepreneur?

Sagar: Life was ok before these thoughts of creating something that outlasts me started to come to my mind. Entrepreneurship interested me right from my engineering days. When I actually started the groundwork to erect my firm the stakes involved in it started to bother me. Sometimes having a good life can be your enemy when it comes to satisfying your dream. I thought a lot and concluded that whether I go for it or not I have to spend 66% of my life with my work and if I do not love it, I would die as an unsatisfied person. My family has been always supportive, so knowing myself was one of the most difficult things for me. Rest of the obstacles does follow your decision like unavailability of finances and all but a will to create never surrender to these issues.

Techaloo: How has a course in management helped you with the business establishment and development?

Sagar: It is helping us on marketing front to be precise; we are now able to market our product well.
Techaloo: If you were to start another business, what might it be?

Sagar: The power of social media has really amazed me; Social media marketing is what I am interested in & I am working on building the idea.
Techaloo: Do you believe business has any obligation to make the world a better place?

Sagar: We started with the motto of making the world a better place to live in. My philosophy of business is ‘Business exists to transform society’ and my definition of entrepreneur is ‘A person who creates and idea, institution and a system that outlasts him.’
