Honey is one of the earliest foods of human being and is obtained from nature as such without any initiative for culturing it. Honey industry in India can well become a major foreign exchange earner if international standards are met, honey production is a lucrative business and it generates employment but it is considered a no-investment profit giving venture in most areas, our efforts are to harvest this opportunity in scientific way by working under an institution Harit Bharat Sansthan (Haribhas)

Fruit beverages industry in India now stands at 1100 crores and the market has grown at the rate of 30%and the market for honey in India is valued at 190/ crore and is growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 25 per cent.

Production of honey is very low compared to china – the highest producer – which exports 80,000 tons annually compared to India’s 7,000 tones

Only about 20 %-25% of the bees are being exploited at present. Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and west Bengal are the major honey producing states

We find this statistics as a great opportunity to start venture in to honey beverages, we work on cooperative model of procurement where we encourage farmers to rear honey in bee hive in scientific way and deliver the produce to our primary collection unit, this way we expect a honey about 8500 Kg, this honey will be used in beverage making at our factory.

Total cost of production per unit come around Rs 9.4/- and we plan to sell the produce at Rs 14/- this way we are gaining a profit of around 35%.

Our main pillar of strength is huge demand of ready to serve beverages, and our cooperative model of procurement.

Initially we are starting our venture with one product i.e. HoneyD In future we have planned to come out with more energy and refreshing beverages.

For finance we are hoping to raise 30% of capital by our own and rest through finance from bank through small and medium enterprises loan repayment of which will be made in four year.

Market potential:

Sensory evaluation of the product has shown a good acceptability among consumers, the fruit beverages industry in India now stands at 1100 crores and the market has grown at the rate of 30%and the market for honey in India is valued at 190/- crore and is growing at a compounded annual growth rate of 25 per cent.

Opportunities: in India

1.       Production of honey is very low compared to china – the highest producer – which exports 80,000 tons annually compared to India’s 7,000 tones

2.       Its consumption is also very low in India.

3.       Only about 20 %-25% of the bees are being exploited at present. Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and west Bengal are the major honey producing states.

4.       Germany is the world’s largest consumer, importing 90,000 tons of honey products annually.

Procurement:

Rearing and honey production on its owned/rented land require a huge setup which in turn needs heavy investment  , which would also makes our product expensive ,so we see potential and imitate the concept of Amul (GCMMF) then a concept of cooperative movement in Honey production , Processing ,Honey Beverage making , marketing of said product, arises.

A cooperative movement is helpful as

  1. Farmer gets additional income by rearing bee in hive
  2. Farmer themselves carry honey up to local collection unit through bicycle thus primary expenditure of transportation can be avoided
  3. Fund can be raised for proper running of firm

Only minimal land is required for rearing bees, the farmers could also rent out their hives to fruit farms for better pollination, and thus higher fruit production. Also, with a large production base and constant, uninterrupted supply, honey has the potential of being a niche export product with high payback to the farmers for minimal expenditure

Processing of Honey:

Bees collect nectar from flowers and Convert this into honey in the bee hive. The different nectars produce the different flavors of honey.

Beekeepers/farmer remove the raw honey from the beehive/honey comb using machines called extractors which spin the honey combs around so the honey is separated from the wax comb.

The honey is then strained, passing through a series of inline filters which remove any beeswax particles from the product.

Liquid or runny honey is filled into jars, while the creaming process begins, whereby the honey is stored in holding vats for a 48 hour period, where it is cooled, stirred and then blended for packing.

Both forms of honey (liquid and creamed) are 100% pure natural honey. No additives or preservatives are used. The holding vats are then emptied into various sized containers then labeled, shrink-wrapped and packaged.

The packaged honey is then taken to the modern purpose-built temperature controlled store. Creamed honey is stored in a cool environment, while Liquid (runny) honey is stored in a warm room before dispatch.
