EZMove: Making house or vehicle moving easy


Shifting house or household is a need which we can’t deny. With increase in accessibility and job options it is not difficult to get better job or education opportunities in  a different city. But what make it difficult is to find a good Packer and Mover, who will take care of valuable items and will provide an hassle free relocation.

But, unfortunately it is not easy to get a good Packer and Mover. Situation becomes even worse because its not like buying a soap or detergent where you can experiment and decide the best, here you relocate at max twice in a period of five years.

Our country has around 40,000-50,000 small and big movers and packers in the industry.Unfortunately, more than 90% of them don’t even a proper office and are running operations from a mobile phone. Many of them don’t even own their own trucks and have to rely on trucks owned by someone else. Typically, they are agents or brokers who get a customer hooked with a low quote.

The problem with this model is that a mover who doesn’t own the transport has no control over its movement and can never be sure as to when the goods will reach the destination or if they will reach at all.

This need was understood by Mr. Anand and Vishwajeet. The duo started EZmove.in to help you in relocating. EZmove works like an aggregator which provides a bridge between customer and the chosen packers and movers.

Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit-chat with Mr. Anand Agarwal, who is Co-Founder and CEO @ EZmove.in. Let see what he has to share with us.

Techaloo: When did you start your journey?
EZMove.in was founded by me and Vishwajeet Singh. The company started operations in August last year.

Techaloo: What motivated you to start Ezmove?
The idea came to me while I was shifting my home a few years back. Like any other customer, I fell prey to the lowest quote I got from after meeting 10 packers. But my overall experience was a nightmare – right from reporting late for packing to charging extra for quality of packing which was included in the quote given earlier to delivering the goods a month later from the committed date in damaged condition and conning me to buy insurance for which a receipt or a policy was never given. That’s when the idea was born and after getting to know of similar experiences from my friends, I decided to venture into this tough terrain.

Techaloo: What was your vision/mission while starting Ezmove?
Our vision is to the biggest brand in the movers and packers industry. We aim to achieve this by bringing in transparency and organise this segment. Make packers and movers more accountable and transparent to the customers.

The company is founded with a single aim to provide high quality relocation experience at a competitve pricing to the customers.

Techaloo: What hurdles did you face while starting?

Anand: We were confident that there is a market out there for service like ours. There is a huge gap in what packers and movers promise and deliver to the customers. However, when we started approaching some of the big packers and movers to sign up with us, their initial impression was that we were selling them some kind of a software. It took a lot of client awareness and our persistent efforts to explain that we are not selling any software in fact partnering with us will ensure them regular business besides bringing down their marketing and customer acquisition costs.

I’m happy to say that we have come a long way. Now, we get calls from various packers and movers every week to sign up with us.

Techaloo: Tell us something about your services.

Anand: EZMove.in is an online portal where a customer can meet a reliable packer by simply filling out an online form. The company currently has around 60 such packers on board. We plan to sign around 200-250 packers over the next 2 years to strengthen our presence across India.

Every M&P is signed up after a series of rigorous checks which include visit to their office by EZMove team, checking their documentation, inspecting their warehouse infrastructure, inspect their quality of packing at a customer’s site, behavior of the crew with the customer and references within the industry.

This method is followed to ensure that the company signs only reliable and accountable movers with a good track record in order to provide a hassle-free relocation experience to the customer.

Techaloo: How is it helping a customer?

Anand: A customer who entrusts a mover with his expensive furniture and goods wants his goods to be moved safely, without damage and delivered on time. These requirements from customers’ perspective form cornerstone of our business ideology. We make sure that our packers have experienced staff who knows how to pack certain delicate goods, use good quality packaging material, load the goods with care and deliver it on time. For a customer, booking a packer through EZMove.in is a free of cost service. We also assign a move co-ordinator who acts like a bridge between the customer and the mover to ensure that the customer is updated about his goods all the time. We believe a business idea like ours has the capability to change the way movers and packers industry has functioned so far.

Techaloo: How easy/ difficult it was to convince packers & movers to come on your platform?

Anand: Initially, the packers and movers were skeptical in signing up with us because they thought we were a lead generation platform like many others in the market. However, over time, we have built a trustworthy relationship and now well-known and reputed names of the industry have either signed up with us or are in the process of signing up.

Were there any instances where P&M declined you because you were bringing transparency to the table?

Fortunately, we approached packers and movers who were in the favour of changing the way this industry has functioned over decades. Thus, we didn’t come across any such incidents.

Techaloo: How does insurance thing works while shifting? There are multiple instances where it doesn’t even work.
As an industry practice, the packer has to take the insurance policy whose premium is 3% of the declared value of the goods being moved. He procures this policy in the name of the customer. In case of damage to the goods, insurance company surveyor inspects and settle the claim where the packer has to co-operate in assessing the value of the damage done.

Techaloo: What is the pricing model?

Anand: As mentioned above, our services are free for the end-user. Our monetary arrangement is with the movers and packers.

Techaloo: What makes you unique?
Anand: We are first company in India to venture into highly unorganized movers and packers industry. The top 5 players in the industry has signed up us – Agarwal Movers and Packers, Calcutta Packers and Movers, Leo Packers and Movers are some of the well-known names in the industry who are now our partners.

Techaloo: How many cities do you have operations as of now?

Anand: We assist customers on pan-India basis. We have already covered more than 300 cities and will be expanding to states like Gujarat and Punjab more aggressively to ramp up our presence.

Techaloo: How is the response till now?

Anand: The response from customers side is very encouraging. In one year of our operations, we have facilitated over 2000 relocations. From our vendors side too, things are going great with biggest players of the industry signing up with us and many more are in the process of coming on board.

Techaloo: What do you see as a missing point in the P&M industry?

Anand: In two words – accountability and transparency. To become a packer, one needs a mobile phone and send out pamphlets or get listed on yellow pages. None of them pay attention to infrastructure needs this business demands, services standard. The customer is kept in dark about their shipment. For eg: They might charge the customer for a certain type of packaging paper or sheet used and actually use an inferior quality one. But the customer doesn’t know the difference and hence ends up paying for higher packaging quality. We want to eliminate such practice.

Once the customer, fills out an online form giving details about his goods and furniture, we respond with details like available packer in their area, kind of truck that will be used, quotations from the packer, cost is directly proportional to the quality of material used for packing, numbers of boys that will be sent for carrying out the relocation previous customers’ recommendations. The idea is to help the customer make an informed call before trusting someone with their goods and furniture.


Techaloo: What are your plans for next 3 years?
We plan to make our business totally technology driven. This will bring more transparency for the customers and increase efficiency of stakeholders in the system. Using technology tools the right way, customers will have ease of information, vendors will be able to respond more accurately. We believe this there has been little or no innovation in this industry in the last decade or so, however, the customer profile has changed significantly. Thus, it becomes all the more important to organise the logistics industry to give best-in-class experience to all the stakeholders and that can be achieved with technology.

We plan to launch a mobile app and a mobile site for our customers and even the vendors next month. While customers can book a vendor with a touch of button on their smartphones, vendors will be able to respond to such business leads much quicker. This will make the overall experience a hassle-free one.

Techaloo: What will be your advice for budding entrepreneurs?

Anand: The budding entrepreneurs should always remember that getting a business idea is just the start. Before venturing into it, make sure you have validated the idea and understood its pros and cons well. Also, unless the idea is unique or first-of-its-kind, it won’t be fun because as entrepreneurs we live for action and a desire to shake up things around us. Another important thing is — don’t doubt yourself or idea every time you hit a rough patch because there are going to be many. And ‘Be wise penny wise’.

EZmove was founded by Anand Agarwal and VIshwajeet Singh in Aug 2013. The duo met while working at Geometric Software and started Sensible Software, an IT product company, which they ran for three and a half year but had to shut down due to lack of funds.

Anand has over a decade of experience working with companies like Geometric and Cognizant where he handled some of the large-scale sensitive PLM initiatives for top brands like BMW, Target and Nissan. Prior to Geometric, he was with Cognizant in the area of insurance & Banking domain. He has lived and worked in Germany and USA and holds a BTech from IIT Kanpur.

Vishwajeet Singh, his colleague from Geometric and his co-founder of previous venture handles the technology side of the operations. He holds a Bachelor Degree from Army Institute of Technology, Pune.

Mohit Bansal(23) is B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India. He has interest in business and entrepreneurship and has published couple of research articles. He is also associated with various NGOs. He is with Techaloo when it was just in concept stage. The Techaloo site was not existing even then. Currently Mohit is working with Mu Sigma as a Business Analyst Profile.
