Frrole : Data intelligence derived solutions for the media, entertainment and consumer verticals

Over the last two years, Frrole has built a powerful semantic engine that can algorithmically extract meaningful, relevant and informational social insights from Twitter conversations. Clients can build custom applications using Frrole Data APIs, or pick from a suite of visually rich apps available as part of the Frrole offering.

Data APIsFiltered data streams and   insights that customers can use to obtain curated content and insights to   build applications. Visual SuitePlug-n-play integrations that can   be embedded into clients’ websites to create visually compelling social   experiences.  Custom SolutionsCustomized solutions for large,   complex projects that can enhance user engagement and create next-gen social   powered applications.

Customers can use Frrole to extract curated, precise content related to topics, location, products or campaigns, and integrate it within their applications, e.g. to display tweets/ photos shared by users during a product launch. They can also derive insights from social conversations, for example to determine who is the most talked about celebrity in India in real-time. And by using Twitter as a communication channel, they are able to amplify their messaging and reach manifold, for example a TV show can now ask people to vote using a hashtag instead of a traditional SMS.

Techaloo got an opportunity to get in touch with founders of Frrole. Let’s have a glance over our conversation.

Techaloo :  How the entrepreneurship journey started? Or who inspired you to start business?

We are a team of three co-founders, all passionate about technology and creating intelligent products. We were working separately in large corporate setups, with multiple constraints to innovate. While some people love to work in a focused, defined way, we wanted more freedom to execute the ideas we had in mind.

Amarpreet was the first one to break out, and started Frrole in Apr 2012. Nishith and Abhishek started talking to him a few months later, started working part-time and finally left their jobs in Dec to join Frrole full-time.

Techaloo : When did you start “Frrole”?

We started Frrole in April 2012 as an online social local newspaper on the premise that real-time, curated social information was missing from newspapers, travel guides, events sites and digital media.

Earlier in 2013, we started realizing that insights from social data is useful for almost all kinds of enterprises, and our intelligent technology can help companies improve user engagement, understand their customers, amplify marketing reach and build relationships. Frrole News grew to almost a million users a month before we pivoted to our enterprise offering in August this year.

Techaloo : What was the vision mission of the Frrole? What exactly you wanted to do when you started your business?

Social data can be used to generate many more insights than what is being generated today. Our mission has always been to be able to understand social web in as much depth as Google understands the web.

When we started, we wanted to solve the problem of real-time local information streams for travel guides/portals. The idea kept growing and we extended the technology to news use-case first and a much larger and mature enterprise offering later.

Techaloo : Why the name “Frrole”?

The name Frrole is a derivative of a word in Punjabi language that roughly translates into ‘to play around, to discover, to explore’. Justifying its name, Frrole enables enterprises to extract useful information/insights from social web in real-time.

The fact that it met 6 of the 7 criteria we had for choosing the name (refer Paul Graham’s essay) and had the .com domain available, finally sealed the deal.

Techaloo : What is the utility of your products for a young startup?

We have the ability to provide very relevant, filtered, precise tweets as per the requirements of a client. Young startups can use our APIs to build applications on top of it by integrating our data stream into their backend. Content based startups can display our highly relevant plug-n-play apps on their websites to provide brand new form of content to their users.

Techaloo : Do you have any other products pending in your lab?

We are working on a user intelligence product, which will have the ability to identify users’ intent and preferences in real-time based on their social activity. This is being developed keeping retail and ecommerce use-cases in mind. Clients will be able to target exactly the same people who have expressed buying/selling intent of various products or like/dislike of people, places and products, all in real-time.

Techaloo : What market is your priority, India or global?

We’re starting with India, partly because of our physical presence here and partly since it’s an untapped market with huge potential in our space. In medium to longer term, we will venture into US market.

Techaloo : Have you got any kind of funding?

We are comfortably bootstrapped till now. The plan was to mature our product offering and have steady revenues coming in before raising a round. Now that we have reached there and are on growth path, we’ve started talking to investors.

Techaloo : What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

The short-mid term plan is to be the first name in the minds of customers in Asian region whenever they plan to do anything with Twitter – Campaigns, insights and analysis.

In the longer run, we plan to be for social web what Google is for web – making sense of social data. We aspire to be a global company analyzing data from all social networks in much greater depth than it is being done today.

Techaloo :  What will be your advice/suggestion for new entrepreneurs for starting new business?

  • Have a team. Startups are way too much work for lone founders.
  • Show investors some incoming money. It’ll increase your chances of getting funded manifolds.
  • Start with a founding team, finding co-founders later can be an incredibly tough task.
  • Have a plan B to sustain yourself, while you are trying to make it big.

Techaloo : Share some info about founders.

Few words about

Techaloo is a wonderful initiative to promote entrepreneurship among young Indians. While the startup community in India is developing over the last few years, it is mostly driven by professionals-turned-entrepreneurs. Recent graduates still prefer to go for stable corporate jobs which will change only when companies like Techaloo will promote the merits of entrepreneurship.

Mohit Bansal(23) is B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India. He has interest in business and entrepreneurship and has published couple of research articles. He is also associated with various NGOs. He is with Techaloo when it was just in concept stage. The Techaloo site was not existing even then. Currently Mohit is working with Mu Sigma as a Business Analyst Profile.
