GoThere – explore and never get lost in Singapore

Visit the site of GoThere and you realize that you are somewhere you did not expect  to be.

The webpage shows a simple horizontal search menu on the top, an ad-strip at the bottom, and simply a map of Singapore in all the remaining visible area.

Well! it is quite evident at the first sight (if you are familiar with the geographical shape of the island lovingly called Singapore) that the site helps you navigate your way in Singapore. Needless to say, it is quite handy to be used on mobile phones. If your phone is GPS enabled, it even tracks your current position, in case you are lost. As GoThere claims, it helps more than 10 million commuters find their way around Singapore every month.

Advanced users will find several useful features like street images, bus information, driving instructions, car parks, shorter routes, traffic info, bus tracking and what not !

What is even more interesting about GoThere is that it was a group of five friends: three pals since high school days –  Dominic Ee Ming Tat, Toh Kian Khai, Kuan Chih Yuan, a passionate Singaporean Mr Ang Junhan, and a Swedish Web designer Jussi Edlund, all of them in the age group 26-28.

Their sheer love and passion for making Singapore more accessible motivated them to pool in a start-up capital of $80,000 from their own pockets and put in their time and sweat in raising their baby ‘GoThere’. Their passion can be gauged by the fact that they spent 9 months driving around every single street in Singapore, surveying roads and the public transport system, as well as taking pictures, in order to create their own proprietary maps.

A boost came in the form a 90 second feature by the Finance Minister of Singapore in his budget speech in 2009.

Another shot of life to GoThere came in the form of Micro-Funding, support from NUS (National University of Singapore) Entrepreneurship Center, and valuable support in the form of office space and other entrepreneurial support (legal, investors network, and several other form of support) from NUS Entrepreneurship Center.

GoThere also collaborated with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore for licensing their technology.

The team of GoThere swears by the mantra of the accuracy of the data and emphasis on good design and usability.

Passion, Persistence, Great Efforts, Good Value System, and a pinch of Luck made the recipe for GoThere.
