It all started in late 2010 (Instamojo was founded in 2012) when Sampad (one of the founders) started a newsletter comprising of video interviews as a side project.

Later he wanted to monetize the newsletter but couldn’t as there wasn’t an easy, hassle-free solution which just works. Soon he realized that the problem was much deeper. The prevalent solutions for selling stuff online were really painful & had too much friction.

This led to present day Instamojo. They are striving to simplify online commerce with focus on design, delivery and distribution. While Instamojo was started as a side project but now it has taken a life of its own.

Instamojo has got funding and support from various big names viz. Rajan Anandan, Sunil Kalra, 500 Startups, Blume Ventures,
Dave McClure, Rob De Hues etc.

Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit chat with Sampad, and got answers for our queries.

Techaloo : Instamojo started as a side project but now it is complete in its own. How do you feel about it?
Sampad : I feel good about it, but we’ve only just begun yet.

Techaloo : What were the initial hurdles, you faced while starting?
Sampad : Apart from personal and financial hurdles that every entrepreneur faces, the major hurdles were regulatory, since we are dealing with digital content which is a sensitive category. But support from the community was encouraging.

Techaloo : How did you find such a robust team?
Sampad : We strongly believe that you want to work with a team that you can also party with. Attitude and desire are far more important than qualifications for us.

Techaloo : You got funding and mentorship from 500startups and other big ventures. What do they look in a startup?
Sampad : They generally look for potential in an idea and strength of the team.

Techaloo : How can one sell their digital belongings with you?
Sampad : All you need to do for that is to upload your digital content, and then share the product link with your audience. The rest is magic!

Techaloo : Are you providing solutions to small businesses as well?
Sampad : Yes, there are businesses selling their Softwares, Magazines and other stuff using Instamojo. We work closely with them so their feedback serves as fodder for all our developments.

Techaloo : What are the biggest 3 categories in ebooks, reports, music, software, templates, tickets, photos, tutorials and data?
Sampad : The biggest categories are tutorials, software and ebooks. Though each category works differently. Some provide a lot of traffic, some provide more activity and some provide more revenues.

Techaloo : What kind of advanced analytics are you providing?
Sampad : Advanced analytics provides you with details of which channels and locations are driving your users to your products and how they are converting. All this can be viewed by breaking into different time periods so you can measure and focus your marketing efforts.

Techaloo : What are your plans for next 3 years?
Sampad : Stay alive! Our focus will be on expanding globally, and improving the product so it further improves the process of selling while keeping it simple.

Techaloo : Any advice to wanna be entrepreneurs?
Sampad : My advice would be to stay very close to the product and your customers. That’s where your best insights and way forward come from.

Techaloo : What do you think about
Sampad : I think is up to some good things, and can make it big with the right focus. Entrepreneurship in colleges needs a push, and such platforms can help that.
