Joota is a social content network platform that lets users build meaningful social networks around content that matters to them. With Joota, users can easily collect and socialize around content (images, videos, text and etc) instantly.

The platform is currently accessible via any web browser but works best on the latest versions of Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Safari. Joota is also mobile-friendly and signing up is free.

Joota was founded by a diverse team of inventors, designers, software developers and marketers from Oregon and Kuala Lumpur.

Joota’s journey started in late 2009 when the co founders initially met to explore ideas of what possibly could be the next big thing and how they could be part of it. In Nov 2010 Joota was started with 4 co founders.

It was in early 2011 that the name Joota which came from the word “juta,” Malay for “millions” to reflect on the abundance of content on the Internet, was adopted.

Between mid of 2011 and early 2012, the startup team focused on getting to solidify ideas and were able to create a prototype. That period was also spent on testing out the early prototypes of Joota that were developed as Joota Sidebar, a plug-in.

However, they discovered that the sidebar’s compact view was quite limiting, and, as a plug-in, it required extra steps of downloading and installing which could be cumbersome to some users. They decided then to transform the sidebar into a web-based platform. The transformation has also allowed them to introduce the concept of cards and decks as part of Jootaverse.

Joota hit a milestone when their web-based social network platform was first released to public in beta in June 2012, thanks to funding raised between 2010 and 2011.

Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit chat with Ashran Ghazi, Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer at Joota. Let see, what he has to share with us.

Techaloo : What motivated you to move into entrepreneurship?
Personally, I have been an entrepreneur for the most part of my life and it is pretty much the same with the other co founders. I love creating new things, and find creating/building new things is the exciting part of any business.

Techaloo : What was your vision/ mission while starting?
When we started Joota, we wanted to build a tech co that can make a global impact coming out of Malaysia. All the co founders shared that vision. We wanted to make the internet a place that can be more meaningful to the individual and an environment that creates value.

Techaloo : How did you build such a robust team?
Its about shared vision. The co founders knew each other in one-way or another before. Some of us were business partners before, while some were just acquaintance. We spent about a year brainstorming and forming a shared vision before we agreed to take on this journey together.

Techaloo : Recently you got $700 K funding, How will the new funding be used?
The funding is used to strengthen the product moving forward, and also to get better market traction.

Techaloo : Do you see anyone as your competitors? How are you different from them?
Broadly, one could say that our competitors are those that are in the social networking space. On the surface, players like Pinterest and scoop.it would be deemed as competitors but we are all about building communities around shared interest and we have designed our app to just do this really well, by allowing communities to be built around a single piece of content or a group of content. Plus, we focus on the conversation aspect of content unlike others. This is apparent on how we have designed the interface. Some have even told us that we are a cross between Pinterest and Twitter, which we think is not a bad representation.

Techaloo : What are your plans for next 3 years?
Growing the community on Joota globally and allowing people to create value from it. Value in our context is about knowledge, reputation and also monetary. We hope to be able to change peoples’ lives by the different way of social networking that is not centered around people but around content.

Techaloo : What will be your advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Look at solving problems and be clear of why you are undertaking the journey because that is the only thing that will keep you going through the tough times.

Techaloo : What do you think about techaloo.com?
I find Techaloo interesting where it focuses on inspiring college students on the path of entrepreneurship unlike most Tech news site that I am familiar with. Awesome job Techaloo. Seeing that Techaloo is grew out of India, I do hope that more of its followers come on board Joota as we just recently partnered with an International Music Awards called VIMA India, and automatically drew a following of community from India. Mohit Bansal(23) is B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India.
