Quizot : new benchmark for online quizzing

Quizot is a one of a kind quiz website that provides the user with an option to enter the answer instead of selecting from a list of predefined options. Once you’re logged in, you see a page called
The Stage
Here, you see a list of 25 topics on which we provide questions. You can select upto three tags, select the level you want to quiz at and press ‘Begin Quiz’.
The questions are generated in the form of a random quiz set of 10 questions related to the selected tag(s).

The questions page
Here, you see the question in the form of an image with an answer field and an answer/pass button next to it.
Passing or attempting the question will show the correct answer and the explanation behind the question. At any point in time, you can pause the quiz and go back to reselect the tags.
The timer is based on the difficulty level, as are the number of credits awarded. Besides the level, the number of credits also depend on how close your answer is to being correct. Minor spelling mistakes normally cause deduction of a few credits.

Quizot was founded by two childhood friends and quizzing geeks, Akshay Bajaj and Varun Jain. It was founded by them when they felt the need to create something fresh and compelling not just for quizzers but for anyone who was interested in learning something new. Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit-chat with Akshay and Varun, lets’ enjoy their journey :

Techaloo : When did you start your journey?
It was April 2013, when Varun and I(Akshay) were sitting in a park, late evening, talking. I had recently moved back to Delhi and we were discussing our future, planning on what to do next. We planned our finances, where we’d like to live, how much we would be spending.
A few days later, we met up again and Varun talked about the idea that turned into Quizot. We discussed the idea extensively for about a month, did our research and by the end of the month, we were sure this, was worth doing and worth doing right.

Techaloo : Where are you based out of?
We are currently based out of Delhi, working from a home office. We have a small team of interns scattered across India that forms the backbone of the company. Cheers to you, guys!

Techaloo : What was your vision/mission while starting Quizot?
Our primary objective was to create content on the website that creates a new benchmark for online quizzing and an implementation that takes into account typos to a various degree and award credits accordingly. We wanted to avoid being yet another quiz website with pop culture Multiple Choice Question quiz sets. Being a part of your target audience definitely helps!

Techaloo : What hurdles did you face while starting?
The biggest hurdle we faced was with the UI design. We hired a freelance designer who delayed the project more than we could afford to be delayed. It set us back a little but then we recovered on lost time by working twice as hard.
PS: We’re still on the lookout for a good UI designer!

Techaloo : Have you got any kind of funding?
We are a bootstrap startup and all the initial funding has been provided by the founders. We’re not looking for funding now or anytime soon and hope to create a self-sustaining setup so we don’t have to rely of Angel Investors/VCs.

Techaloo : What is your target market?
Our target audience primarily is serious quizzers and anyone with the will to self learn and improve their knowledge.
“Quizot Is a platform for quiz and culture enthusiasts.”

Techaloo : What are the unique features of Quizot?
The heart of Quizot is the algorithms that drive the question evaluation and keep the content relevant and fresh through multiple checks for content quality. It is a system built to endure.
Also the fact that we’re one of the few who managed to get answer evaluation right along with content that keeps you addicted.

Techaloo : Explain a little more about “Flagging”?
We put in the flag feature to ensure that any bad content that accidentally gets pushed into the system gets weeded out soon enough.
Currently, users can raise three kind of flags:
i. Bad Question Flag
This flag is meant to be raised when the question is poorly framed or not up to the mark in terms of quality.
ii. Incorrect Answer flag
A user can raise this flag when they think their answer was correct and yet was incorrectly evaluated.
iii. Incorrect Explanation flag
This flag is for the possibility that the explanation provided in the question is irrelevant to the question or does not help resolve the user’s understanding of the question’s background.
In every case the flags are evaluated by the moderators and if found to be correct, due credits are awarded to the user who raised it.
This forms the third and final net of our Quality assurance for the content.

Techaloo : What makes you different from your competitors?
We are targeting a pretty specific audience, that so far has only had quiz blogs and facebook groups to find content at. But the life of questions at blogs and facebook pages/groups is really short as the first person to answer the question makes the answer visible to everyone else.
In that sense, we provide unique questions to a specific user, each time, with the assurance that it will definitely be a learning experience.

Techaloo : How is the response for “Invite Only” stage?
The response to our Public Beta stage at which we’re invite only has been overwhelmingly positive. The positive response has been the main driving force for the team to work harder to push new features. Currently, the website has 800+ active users, with the numbers steadily rising.

Techaloo : When are you going live?
Who said we aren’t? All you need to do is write to us at contact@quizot.com for an invite.
We’ll go off the invite mode once we’ve integrated the new features into the system.

Techaloo : What are your plans for next 3 years?
We plan to introduce various new features on the website such as leaderboards and social media integration in the coming months and refine functionality over time.
Also in the works is a cross-platform mobile app which will be launched beginning of 2014.

Techaloo : What will be your advice for budding entrepreneurs?
We started Quizot with two primary rules of thumb
i. Ideas are dime a dozen, execution is an omnipresent non-existent entity.
ii. Do it yourself. Try to rely on external vendors/freelancers as less as possible.
I would advice all the budding entrepreneurs to adhere to these when starting a project.

Techaloo : What do you think about techaloo.com?
It is very important to encourage entrepreneurship in colleges. This is because the students have little financial responsibilities and can afford to experiment. This makes techaloo extremely relevant and an important platform for encouraging and supporting the same.

Don’t you want an invite???
If yes, browse www.quizot.com
