Two technology startups from Singapore are in Cambridge under the tutelage of fast growing international business Red Gate Software as part of a new tech-twinning initiative.
Entrepreneurs from Sent.ly and Novatap have been receiving mentoring as part of a competition run by Red Gate and the Singapore Infocomm Development Authority.
The initiative is at the heart of the Cambridge Connection ‘two tech cities’ venture driven by Taylor Vinters, Cambridge Capital Group, Red Gate, UKTI, Singapore IDA and Cambridge Consultants.

Sent.ly and Novatap were chosen as inaugural winners by a judging panel from Red Gate and IDA at Echelon 2013, Asia’s largest tech conference.

Nick Wood, head of operations of Red Gate said: “We’ve set up a great programme for the two teams. They’re receiving mentoring from our internal experts, and we’re putting them in front of some of the finest entrepreneurs and investors in Cambridge and the UK. Both teams are benefiting hugely from their advice.

“Last week, entrepreneur Jack Lang, currently chair of The Raspberry Pi Foundation, came to Red Gate to talk to them about what investors want from a startup and to give them one-to-one mentoring. I’m personally very excited about how the programme is running and I know both Sent.ly and Novatap are, too.”

The teams are attending a number of networking events in the region including the CUE Grand Launch, and will be visiting Ideaspace, the Cambridge University Enterprise Accelerator unit at the Hauser Forum, as guests of Struan McDougall, Cambridge Capital Group, who has arranged a series of relevant meetings for them there.

To reach the final stage of the contest, the start-ups saw off competition from 25 other companies in a pre-selection round and an online video-pitch to the mentoring team at Red Gate.

Kapil Mahajan from Sent.ly, which allows businesses in emerging markets to communicate effectively with their customers over SMS, in place of email, comments: “A week at Red Gate has been more fruitful than months of trying to battle it out on our own. We’ve had the opportunity to learn from some of the thought leaders within the teams here and that has been a great start to our six week stay here.”

Shivam Pathak, software engineer and systems architect at Novatap, adds: “From a business point of view, this is an excellent opportunity for us to get to know more industry experts, professionals and entrepreneurs and expand our network.

“Red Gate is helping us connect to the right people whose guidance can really help us understand industry trends, gather useful information and solve our technical and business problems – setting milestones for our product in near future.”

Sent.ly provides businesses, both brick and mortar as well as online businesses with a single interface that they can use for transactional and marketing messaging. Sent.ly systems have an efficient online interface that can be used by the marketing teams and a comprehensive programmer interface that can be connected to business intelligence software.

With a unique two-way interface, businesses can now set up interactive communication without having to deal with expensive short-code systems. For businesses that work across multiple countries, Sent.ly provides a single point of contact, saving them the time wasted on integrating with a different provider in each country of operation.

Novatap DockPHP is doing for web 2.0 what Vermeer/FrontPage did for the internet 1.0 in the 1990s. It incorporates and leverages the latest technologies in the field of web development – HTML5 and CSS3.

There is no tool in the market that incorporates the latest technologies and provides a fully functional end-to-end platform focused on the developers/development houses that produce commercial-ready websites rather than novices.

The unique advantage for dockPHP that limits existing potential competitors in entering the market. It can increase developer productivity by reducing time spent on the same task by up to 75 per cent.

Eventually, dockPHP will not only help a user with HTML/CSS or the front-end development, but also focus on JavaScript as well as Server side plugins making dockPHP a first-of-its-kind product.
