Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit chat with Dhimant Mehta, founder @ Sandhira.com.com. Let see what he wants to share with you.

 

Techaloo : How did this idea come to your mind?
Dhimant : In 2010, a terrible financial recession swept across United States and the tremors of this financial disaster were felt all over the world. The impact of recession was especially severe on small business owners. It was then the founders of Sandhira.com, Dhimant and Sangeeta Mehta, came up with a plan to help the small business owners in boosting their revenue during the economic downturn.

Mr. Mehta recalls, “One morning, my wife and I thought about all the things we bought in the last six months and realized that we bought almost everything online. We thought of using digital media, due to the fact that everything now can be found on our fingertips. It is the necessity of time.”

There was nothing like a South Asian portal catering to the day to day needs of the community, and so in order to fill that ‘big void’ the process to establish a single platform to cater to the daily needs of the South Asian community was initiated.

Techaloo : Have you got any kind of funding or planning for the same?
Dhimant : We did not have any seed funding for our start-up. But friends and family who have always supported in times of need helped us in this venture.

Techaloo : Why the name “Sandhira”?
Dhimant : It’s a combination of names of my family members.  My wife Sangeeta Mehta (San), Me Dhimant Mehta (dhi), my daughter Rajvi (ra). And this combination gave us a unique name that clicks with the audiences.

Techaloo : What was the vision of the Sandhira? What exactly you wanted to do when you started your business?
Dhimant : To connect South Asian Businesses and consumers, to serve their regional or global objectives and to bring the whole community under single cultural roof.

Techaloo : What kind of difficulties you had faced while starting/doing business?
Dhimant :
Managing Cash flow:
Managing cash flow when starting a business is really tricky. Bad cash flow management can lead to death of even most profitable and prosperous businesses, let alone a start up. It takes money to make money.

Balancing Sales and Marketing:
Entrepreneurs may have a brilliant product or service but they land in a ‘Catch 22’ while getting their feet on the ground to sell and market their products. The catch is we need sales to afford a sales/marketing lead, at the same time we need a sales/marketing to generate sales.

Techaloo : What are the reasons for targeting Canada only? Are you planning to expand your horizon?
Dhimant : We wanted to start with a smaller subset of the South Asian community worldwide. Density wise, Vancouver and Ontario are the two Canadian cities that have 50% of the South Asian community in Canada. Hence, starting a South Asian community portal there made more sense.

We will launch Sandhira.com in the following countries within a few years: Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Singapore, and many more, to connect all the South Asians worldwide under a single umbrella.

Techaloo : Share some info about your products and services here.
Dhimant : Sandhira, Inc. has launched a Community Portal in the following business areas:

Business Listings, Events, Entertainment, News, South Asian Leaders, Sports, Recipes, Places of worship, Articles, Organizations, Festivals, Horoscopes and Share your memory. Sub categories of each of this section offer a variety of information.

Sandhira.com also offers various Referral Services such as Premium Business Listings, Hot Deals, Classifieds, Jobs, Buy Tickets (movie & events), Sandhira Mall, and Online Banner Advertisements. These are the revenue generation options. Sandhira.com is a platform where a seller can create awareness about his products.

Techaloo : Do you provide localized search also?
Dhimant : Yes, we provide localized search.

Techaloo : Are you planning for some kind of mobile apps? 
Dhimant : Yes, we have developed the mobile app which will be launched soon for android and ios platform. The website is already mobile friendly i.e. a user can browse all the pages of the website with ease as the web pages are resized according to device.

Techaloo : What is your user base?
Dhimant : Our user base is five million people which include the ever expanding south asian community worldwide.

Techaloo : How is the response till now?
Dhimant : Sandhira.com has more than a million visitors and more than two million page views. Our global rank is below 25,000. In the short time period of six months, there has been tremendous growth in our global ranking. Sandhira.com is serving more than thousand merchants throughout the United States and Canada. The Business Listing category has reached half a million with more than fifty event partners.

Techaloo : What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next 2 years?
Dhimant : We will launch Sandhira.com in the United Kingdom and India in the near future. We will also launch Sandhira.com in the following countries within a few years: Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Singapore, and many more, to connect all the South Asians worldwide under a single umbrella.

Techaloo : What will be your advice/suggestion for new entrepreneurs for starting new business?
Dhimant :
Say it in 30 seconds or don’t say it at all.
From an elevator encounter with an investor to a chat with a curious customer, always be ready to pitch your business with clarity and confidence. State your mission, service and goals in a clear and concise manner. Tailor your approach in accordance with the specific individual. Remember less is always more.

As a start-up, Sandhira.com believes there is no thumb rule for success and hence trial and error is the way to go. Also it is important to have a ‘Plan B’ ready for everything.

Techaloo : Few words about techaloo.com?
Techaloo is the only website who gave a quick response in less than 3 hours. We also have tie-ups with other websites but we find techaloo to be the fastest responsive website. We wish them best of luck for their bright future.

And with her vast experience in accounting and management, she has added much needed practical steel to their dream project.While on forefront Dhimant try to orchestrate business operations with all the hard work, she supports Dhimant by managing the ground operations backstage.

Mohit Bansal(23) is B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, India. He has interest in business and entrepreneurship and has published couple of research articles. He is also associated with various NGOs. He is with Techaloo when it was just in concept stage. The Techaloo site was not existing even then. Currently Mohit is working with Mu Sigma as a Business Analyst Profile.
