Scoot – best way to hail a cab

On demand taxi services are gaining pace across pan India. The trend is not only for the metros but taxi aggregators like Ola, TaxiForSure, Uber etc. are moving to capture the next big markets i.e. tier 2 cities.

While it is convenient itself but switching the apps to search for the nearest available taxi makes it annoying sometimes.

Sagar Yarnalkar ( alumni BITS Pilani Goa Campus, co-founder at ) and Gunjan Thakuria ( alumni IIT Madras, previously co-founder at ) understood the need and developed an app to solve the problem in a time less than a week.

Based out of Mumbai, Scoot makes your cab hailing process smarter.Using the app you can compare availability and real time ETA of cabs across different cab services/aggregators like Olacabs, Uber and Taxiforsure.

-It takes the pain out of juggling between multiple apps to find the nearest available cab, and brings all information in one simple screen.

-Once you have selected your nearest cab, the app will lead you to the relevant service providers app to complete the booking

– In case you do not have the service providers app installed, it will take you to the play store to install the relevent app to complete your booking

– Currently it shows nearest available cabs across Olacabs, Uber and Taxiforsure

Techaloo got an opportunity to have a conversation with Sagar. Let see what he wants to share with us.

Techaloo: What motivated you to launch Scoot?
Sagar: I am a regular user of Ola, Uber and Taxi for Sure and always find it very painful to juggle between different apps to find the nearest available cab. Hence I decided to do something about it and created a simple aggregator of these 3 apps to show me real time ETA of all of them.

Techaloo: What was your vision/mission while developing the app?
Sagar: We wanted to allow our user to find the nearest available cab in the most hassle free way. Currently a commuter has to go through a frustrating process of opening multiple apps of different service providers just to find the nearest and fastest available cab. We wanted to create a simple app which makes this easy by showing the user all the options on a single screen.

scoot_side1Techaloo: What hurdles did you face while starting?
Sagar: Availability of data sources was the most pressing issue.

Techaloo: Tell us something about the app?
Sagar: Currently the app provides nearest available cabs for each of –Ola, Taxi For Sure and Uber. On clicking the selected cab, it would take you to the service provider’s app if it is installed else it will take you to the play store to get it installed.

Techaloo: Wouldn’t it be better if I can get the fare comparison as well along with the time?
Sagar: Yes, fare comparison is as significant as time. We are working on the UX/UI part of this feature to seamlessly integrate price comparisons as well.

Techaloo: Will you be showing the available discounts provided by the aggregators as well?
Sagar: We have’nt thought of it as yet. Currently we are just focusing on how to make it very easy to select a cab. But yes it does seem like a great idea to show offers that each individual has got to help in the selection process.

Techaloo: Which OSs do you have services available currently?
Sagar: We currently support Android only. We are working on releasing an iOS app soon.

Techaloo: Which cities are you currently providing services in?
Sagar: Scoot is independent of city, wherever either of Uber, Ola and TaxiForSure are available our app would work.

Techaloo: How are you different from your competitors in various segments?
Sagar: There is few competition, but of the few options that are available we differentiate ourselves in how we have designed our app, it is the simplest to use and targets just one use case(on demand taxi hailing) and does it very well.

Techaloo: How is the response till now?
Sagar: It has been very good, people have absolutely loved the app and it has just been 2 days since we have launched the app. We were featured on YourStory just a few hours after launch, and Scoot has attracted a lot of attention on public forums. Whats more, everything has been organic.

scoot_side2Techaloo: What are your plans for next 3 years?
Sagar: On demand taxi hailing is popular around the globe and people face the same problems that we have solved in India. So we would like add other popular services like Lyft, Hailo etc and be present everywhere. Also we would like to add other modes of on demand transportation services like car sharing (zipcar, zoomcar etc) , bike sharing( citi bike share) . Basically a one stop solution for on demand transport information.

Techaloo: You have also founded “FurnishMeUp”. How did that experience help you while thinking of “Scoot”?
Sagar: I am also one of the founders of FurnishMeUp. It made me realize the difficulty and challenges it takes to start something from scratch and give it shape. Bringing your idea from paper into the real world is a tough process, and being with FurnishMeUp gave me some experience in handling the same.

Techaloo: What will be your advice for budding entrepreneurs?
Sagar: Start with a crystal clear use case and build your MVP fast and test the response. If you start something better be ready to stick with it. Entrepreneurship teaches you a lot and is a very humbling experience.

Techaloo: What do you think about
Sagar: It is a great platform for fostering entrepreneurship, allowing people to share their stories and also read about other inspiring stories. You guys are doing a brilliant job by providing exposure to new startups.

This is really cool! I’ve actually never heard of Scoot; I might have to look into it! I travel a lot for my job, so hailing a taxi is something that I have to do often. It would be nice to have an app to help me out. It’s a shame that this app isn’t available for iOS yet. I hope they change that soon!
