As a feather in the crown “Kashyap Dalal”, founder & ex-CEO @ Inkfruit joined SimpliLearn as Chief Products Officer.

Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit-chat with Mr. Krishna Kumar, founder and CEO @ SimpliLearn. Let us see. what he wants to share with us.

Techaloo : What made you motivated to join the entrepreneurship community?
Krishna : Simplilearn is my second venture. Prior to this, I was involved in the software product business, which I sold to a listed company in 2007. I started my first venture within a few months of passing out of the college. The primary reason was that I was not satisfied with the work offers that I was getting. The first few months of employment was not challenging enough for me, which led me to branch out on my own.

Techaloo : How did this Idea come to your mind?
Krishna : Simplilearn was initially started as a blog in 2009. In a span of 9 months, I had trained 3000 people in 100+ countries and I realized the potential of going commercial.

Techaloo : What was your vision/mission while starting Simplilearn?
Krishna : Simplilearn’s vision is to provide good service to working professionals. Working professionals generally are hard pressed for time, so we wanted to enable the option of learning online, 24/7 and even on weekends. I also found that many a time, the training is as good as the trainer who delivers the training, so I aimed to change this to ensure that everyone receives good training irrespective of the quality of the trainer. This we have achieved by providing top quality online courseware.

Techaloo : What hurdles did you face while starting?
Krishna : In the initial stages we had faced some challenges in creating good quality online courses in a short time frame and in increasing our offerings while continuing to maintain consistency in quality. Without local employees, we also faced challenges with classroom delivery across hundreds of cities across the globe. But nevertheless, we have been able to overcome these challenges over time.

Techaloo : How difficult is to work with professionals for study?
Krishna : It is not difficult to work with professionals. Professionals are well aware about the importance and the need for certification, which ensures growth in their career ladder. And we help them achieve their goals.

Techaloo : You recently received Helion Ventures and Kalaari Capital, What improvements can we expect in coming time?
Krishna : With infused capital, we are looking at strengthening our leadership team, further improve our course offering, course quality and increase penetration on mobile devices. We are also looking at strengthening our global presence.

Techaloo : What are the top courses people are opting for?
Krishna : PMP, ITIL (Foundation and Practitioner), PRINCE2, Six Sigma, Cloud Computing, CSM.

Techaloo : You are providing services since 2009, what changes do you see in topics being opted for?
Krishna : Newer courses like cloud, big data and virtualization, among others, are in high demand among new age professionals. We constantly look at adding courses which are in demand and for which aspirants are looking for assistance.

Techaloo : How are you managing the course content?
Krishna : We have a large team consisting of Project Managers, instructional designers and Quality analysts who continuously develop and keep the content updated. We also work with subject matter experts across the globe to get quality inputs to ensure that we deliver world class content.

Techaloo : What are the benefits of having in-house course content?
Krishna : One of the major benefits that I see in having an in-house content team is that we can customize our course content to address key issues, which are important to aspirants.

Techaloo : What 3rd party courses are you offering?
Krishna : We have various third party courses from Microsoft, CISCO, SAP and HP. There are many more in the pipeline.

Techaloo : What is the learning process at Simplilearn?
Krishna : Our training methodology is a mix of online and self-learning using audio video content and instructor support either in a classroom environment or via live classes over the internet. We call it the blended model of learning.

In addition, we provide practice test to gauge the learning progress, case studies and exercises for group work and blogs to keep our users updated on their chosen area of expertise.

Techaloo : What is the recognition of certification provided by you?
Krishna : Almost all our courses are globally recognized as they are accredited by governing bodies like PMI, APMG, EXIN, CompTIA, IIBA, EC Council and others.

Techaloo : Can we see platforms such as Cloudera as your competitors?
Krishna : We see them as part of our eco-system. They have certifications in the area of cloud computing and big data. We are looking at partnering with them and offering their certification courses on our training platform as well.

Techaloo : How is the response till now?
Krishna : We have got a phenomenal response in the last 3 years and are training more than 5000 new users every month. So far, we have trained more than 100,000 professionals.

Techaloo : What are your plans for next 3 years?
Krishna : We are looking at big investments to create world class courses that become benchmarks in the online learning space. We will create a new benchmark when it comes to customer delight.

Techaloo : What will be your advice for a new startup?
Krishna : As long as you are doing something wherein customers see value and can potentially pay for that value, everything will fall into place. Be patient! Sometimes, getting results can take longer than expected.

Techaloo : What do you think about
Krishna : TechAloo is a great initiative to foster entrepreneurship.  Such platforms are a great resource to share knowledge and learn from each other.
