The secret of getting ahead is getting started

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started” – Agatha Christie

In entrepreneurship as well as life the only way to get ahead is to take the first step with confidence. As we all know the first step is often the hardest.’ The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ is an often aptly quoted saying.

Procrastination is our greatest enemy. We always hear an inner voice say ‘Take it easy, do not jump into this business too soon, you aren’t ready yet ‘. The problem is that we are never ever ready for what life has in store for us, be it in business matters or life in general. So isn’t better to face life head on rather than hide behind a rock waiting for things to calm down.

Another quote that comes to mind is ‘The early bird gets the worm’, In this new era of technological advancement the only way a company can survive , is to be highly resourceful and competitive and act quickly whenever they see an advantage that can be exploited or used for their benefit.

They say the best time to plant a tree was twenty five years ago, and the second best time is now. Similarly for startups the sooner we start, the sooner it can make out its shortcomings, ideate, innovate and come up with a new and improved Version 2.0.

Live in the moment. We cannot change the past and the future is not in our hands. The only thing we can control is the present.

‘One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind.’ was Neil Armstrong’s first words when he placed his foot on the moon. That one step that he took created a ripple effect and we have progressed a great deal in space exploration now.

harshit2If you do not feel like doing a ‘face palm’ right now and cursing yourself for being so naive and stupid ,thinking about the first version of your product you launched your product too late.

There is only so much a person can learn from planning and strategizing .In the end after all the talk, you have to know and have the guts to walk the walk. ‘Doing ‘ is better than ‘Planning’. Also by doing we are able to enter our creative flow states. Where good ideas and plans come to us intuitively

First movers advantage is an interesting concept. Bill Gates outsmarted Steve Jobs by releasing his version of the Operating system: ‘Windows’, just earlier than Steve Jobs and we know how that has changed the world.

First movers generally have a huge advantage, being able to attract huge profit margins and almost an entire share of the market. The others who follow and try to copy, generally do not last long. Its the survival of the fittest and only the toughest and most dynamic companies who are proactive can survive and flourish.

Starting is always the hardest part. After gaining a bit of momentum, life always provides us with ‘steady winds’ to help us sail our metaphorical ship in the right direction at a steady pace. No matter how slow you think you are going, it’s always better to start up at least rather than sit idle and do nothing, waiting for the ideal time. Remember, idle minds are the devil’s workshop.
