Analytics, Big Data, Decision Sciences are few important keywords of today’s business. Storage cost has gone down and computation capabilities have shooted up. This is the time when you need to look into your data before taking any decision.

Sreeram, who has worked with ZS Associates for 4.5 year, understood the need and tried to build an user friendly UI based application to startups. Ubiq tool is currently in testing phase and being tested by few pilots.

So, if you want to have a data driven decision, you don’t need to hire some “high paid analyst”; Just go to ubiq.co

Techaloo got an opportunity to have a chit chat with Sreeram, lets enjoy his journey.

Techaloo : When did you start Ubiq.co?
I started Ubiq in April 2013. Got the prototype ready and have been working with a few pilot users since. Iterating based on their feedback.

Techaloo : Where are you based out of?
I’m based out of Thane, Mumbai.

Techaloo : What was your vision/mission while starting this venture?
The mission is to simplify analytics & reporting so that anyone can just plug & play with their data. In my previous job, I used to work on different analytics tools. They were legacy tools meant for Enterprise and were consequently bulky and difficult to use. You had to approach a sales rep who would demo the product and then negotiate on licensing fees. Then spend weeks to setup these applications, go through documentation & training just to get familiar with basic features. I wanted to do something about it. So I built Ubiq Analytics.

Techaloo : Have you got any kind of funding or are you looking for it?
Ubiq Analytics is a part of an Accelerator called The Morpheus. So I have received the funds provided as a part of their program. As far as Angel or VC funding, it is too early to look for funding.

Techaloo : Explain a little more about Ubiq ?
Ubiq Analytics is an easy-to-use data analytics tool meant for startups & online businesses. You can easily query your MySQL database using a drag & drop UI, visualize them on real time dashboards. Dashboards show latest information based on most recent data. It helps Saas and App businesses to find out which features are used more and improve rapidly. It also helps them track signups, retention, conversion & other growth indicators in real time. Ecommerce businesses can use it to find top customers, products & categories. They can create better marketing campaigns based on the findings.

Techaloo : What is the limitation on data size for creating dashboard using ubiq?
There is no limitation imposed on data size. It has been tested to give response within 4-5 seconds for upto 5 million records.

Techaloo : What kind of data is being allowed? Categorical, continuous, ordinal or any kind of data?
It works on any kind of data as long as it is stored in MySQL database. It can be data about users, website, sales, operations, wordpress blogs, applications like magento, etc. Ubiq does not impose a restriction on nature of data.

Techaloo : Can I update the data frequently for already created dashboard?
Yes, you can regularly update the data for already created dashboard. No need to update anything in Ubiq Analytics. It has Real time dashboards. The dashboard always show the latest information. You can also export it as PDF or image to save snapshots.

Techaloo : How are you different from SAP BO and other competitive product?
The target customer for Ubiq & SAP BO are different. Ubiq is built with startups & online businesses in mind. It is meant for quick & easy analytics. SAP BO is an enterprise software mostly used by Fortune 5000 companies. It is built to handle complicated business rules for all types of large organizations. This makes it bulky, costly and time consuming to learn and use. The key for Ubiq is to help businesses go from data to insights as soon as possible. You can signup and start using it in 5-10 minutes instead of spending days on installation & training. It even supports cloud based database out of the box. So you can easily connect to MySQL on Amazon Web Services.
You need IT professionals to setup & deploy SAP BO on your premise. This means you need dedicated staff and hardware for it. Ubiq is web based. So, you don’t need IT professionals to setup Ubiq Analytics and maintain it for you.
Also, you need to negotiate licensing upfront for SAP BO. Ubiq is a SaaS based product. You can use it for free till you feel the need to upgrade. Even paid plans are monthly. So, you can opt out whenever you want. No lock in or contracts.

Techaloo : Can I create custom variables as well?
Not at the moment. I will be adding support for it soon. You can currently use formulae in SQL mode.

Techaloo : Are you planning to build some other advanced features like modeling?
Yes, the idea is to add more advanced analytics capabilities like regression, predictive modeling, etc.

Techaloo : Generally people say that “As business is dynamic so taking decisions based on past data is not a right approach”, do you agree?
Not really. Data driven decisions validate your ideas quickly. It helps you spot opportunities and risks early on. Measuring things gives a good sense of direction and motivates you to improve those numbers. Even simple analytics give you an idea about the past and present, in real time.

Techaloo : A new startup can’t have much amount of data to analyze. How can he use analytics for his business?
Young startups which don’t have much data can start by tracking simple numbers important to them like signups, paying customers, retention, conversion, etc on a daily or weekly basis. This will give them a good idea about how their product is used, impact of their marketing activities. They can catch mistakes early on. They can also find out if a feature is being used or not. E.g, if your app has a file upload feature, you can track number of files uploaded over time by users. This will tell you how often it is used, etc. That’s why Ubiq has a free plan where young startups can at least start tracking simple but important things. As their business grows, they can use it for more detailed analytics. Otherwise, everything becomes a matter of guesswork.

Techaloo : What are your plans for next 3 years?
It’s too early to think about it at the moment. Right now, the focus is to make Ubiq Analytics as simple & powerful as possible. Iterate based on user feedback.

Techaloo : What do you think about techaloo.com?
Techaloo is a great initiative to foster entrepreneurship. It is a good source of knowledge & experience for people looking to take the plunge and start something of their own. Colleges are the best place to encourage entrepreneurship. There is a lot of time to try out different things, network with people and collaborate on projects.

Techaloo : Any advice to “wanna be” entrepreneurs?
Get the prototype out of the door and into the hands of pilot users as soon as possible. Focus early on traction and monetization. Do not be tempted to build a company with the aim of an exit or funding. Enjoy the journey and have fun.
